Recently I received 2 phone calls from strange numbers. The first was only 6 digits long, the second was 8 digits. Why would phone number be less than 7 or 10 digits?

This is called “short code”. These types of numbers are often attributed to SMS or MMS messages. They are often used for value-added services like television program voting, ordering cell phone ringtones or backgrounds, charity donations and mobile services. Many people will recognize these as the numbers from TV commercials: “Text Nelly to 72404 for the ringtone”.

This will also depend on the country you are in. In much of Europe six digit long numbers are used for directory services and emergency help lines. In Australia, 6 or 8 digit numbers with the prefix “19” are transactional or subscription service numbers. In the US these numbers could be attributed to a certain service provider’s “Beta test service” or “Free to end user” marketing campaigns.
